Seasoned Firewood vs Green Firewood: What Winchester VA Homeowners Should Know

If you’re shopping for firewood Winchester VA homeowners and businesses can count on this winter, the biggest decision isn’t oak vs hickory — it’s seasoned firewood vs green firewood. That choice affects how hot your fire burns, how much smoke you get, and how much creosote builds up in your chimney.
At Patriot Tree Service, we only sell seasoned firewood that is moisture-tested before it leaves our yard. We sell by the cord and in IBC crates for easy stove, fireplace, and fire-pit use across Winchester, Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry, and Berkeley Springs.
What is green firewood?
Green firewood is freshly cut wood that still holds a lot of water — often 40% moisture or higher. It can look ready to burn, but the water inside has to boil off before the wood can produce real heat. That means slower starts, cooler fires, more smoke, and more creosote. Green wood is also heavier to stack and move, and it can mold or attract bugs if you try to store it indoors too soon.
What is seasoned firewood?
Seasoned firewood has been split and dried until the moisture content is low enough to burn cleanly. Properly seasoned hardwood typically tests well under 20% moisture. It lights easier, burns hotter, makes less smoke, and is safer for chimneys and wood stoves because it produces less creosote.
Seasoned firewood vs green firewood: quick comparison
Moisture: Seasoned is moisture-tested and dry; green is wet and heavy.
Heat: Seasoned burns hot; green wastes energy drying itself out.
Smoke & creosote: Seasoned burns cleaner; green makes more smoke and chimney buildup.
Ready to use: Seasoned is stove-ready; green needs months of drying before it’s reliable firewood.
Why Patriot Tree Service only sells seasoned firewood
We don’t sell green wood and leave the drying to you. Every load of firewood we sell is seasoned and moisture-tested before it goes out — typically well under 20% — so it’s ready for the stove, fireplace, or fire pit. Our mix is clean split hardwood such as oak, hickory, cherry, and similar species.
